Wabasha IV facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Wabasha IV (born in 1854, died in 1925) was an important leader of the Mdewakanton Dakota tribe. He was also known by his Dakota name, "Hdakinyan," and sometimes as Napoleon Wabasha. He played a key role in his community, helping his people adapt to new ways of governance.

Who Was Wabasha IV?

Wabasha IV was a member of the Mdewakanton Dakota, which is one of the main groups of the larger Dakota people. The Dakota are a Native American tribe with a rich history and culture. Wabasha IV was a respected minister, meaning he was a religious leader in his community.

Early Life and Military Service

When he was a young man, from 1873 to 1874, Wabasha IV worked as a scout for the 7th Cavalry Regiment. A scout is someone who explores an area to gather information, often for military groups. This experience gave him a unique view of the world and helped him understand different ways of life.

A New Way of Leading

In 1878, Wabasha IV was chosen to be part of the tribal council on the Santee Sioux Reservation. A tribal council is a group of elected or appointed leaders who help govern a Native American tribe. This was a big change for the Santee Sioux people. Before this, they often followed an "old chief system," where leadership was passed down through families. By voting for a council, they chose a new way to make decisions for their community.

Becoming a U.S. Citizen

Later in his life, in 1909, Wabasha IV became a United States citizen. At that time, not all Native Americans were automatically U.S. citizens. This step was important for many Native American leaders as it allowed them to have more rights and a stronger voice within the larger United States government.
