What Makes This Place Special?
This amazing area is located on both sides of the River Nene. It has many different types of natural homes, called habitats. These habitats are perfect for a wide variety of animals and plants.
Different Habitats to Explore
On the west side of the River Nene, you'll find two main types of habitats:
- Alder Woodland: This is a forest area where alder trees grow. These trees love wet ground, so it's often a damp and shady place.
- Marshy Grassland: This is a wet, grassy area. It's like a meadow but with much more water, making it squishy underfoot.
On the east side of the river, there's something even more unique:
- Natural Grassland: This is the biggest area of its kind in Northamptonshire. It's a grassland that hasn't been changed by farming or other human activities. It grows on special soil made of river mud and gravel. More than 100 different kinds of flowering plants grow here!
The Oxbow Lake
The River Nene also has a special bend called an oxbow lake. Imagine a river that used to curve a lot. Over time, the river might cut a new, straighter path. The old bend then gets cut off, forming a U-shaped lake. This oxbow lake at Wadenhoe Marsh is home to some very rare plants.
Visiting Wadenhoe Marsh and Achurch Meadow
If you like walking and exploring nature, part of this site is open to the public.
The Nene Way is a long-distance walking path. It runs through the west side of Wadenhoe Marsh, following the river. This means you can walk along the path and enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife.
However, the larger meadows on the east side of the river are private land. This means you can't walk or visit those parts. They are kept undisturbed to protect the delicate plants and animals that live there.
