Wagner's Point is a part of Baltimore, Maryland, known for its industrial activities. This means many factories and businesses operate there. The area got its name from an old company that used to be there.
The Story Behind the Name
The name "Wagner's Point" comes from the Martin Wagner Company. This company had a large beef packing plant in the area a long time ago. A beef packing plant is where meat is prepared for sale. In 1913, a big fire destroyed the Martin Wagner plant. Later, the city of Baltimore bought the land. Today, the city uses this site for its Patapsco Waste Water Treatment Plant. This plant helps clean water for the city.
A Community Moves On
Until the late 1990s, Wagner's Point was also home to a community where people lived. However, the city decided to move these residents. This was because of concerns about the environment in the area. Living so close to industrial plants can sometimes affect people's health.
Relocation and New Homes
The city worked to buy the homes from the residents. There were about 270 families living there at the time. The discussions about buying the properties were sometimes difficult. On September 17, 1998, representatives for the residents even left one of the meetings. After the city bought the properties, the houses were carefully taken down. This helped make sure the area was safe for its new industrial purpose.
