The Waihua River is a cool river found in the northern part of the Hawke's Bay Region in New Zealand. This region is on the North Island, one of New Zealand's two main islands. The Waihua River flows in a path that is quite similar to the Waiau River, which is its neighbor to the north.

Where Does the Waihua River Go?

The Waihua River starts its journey in some hilly, rugged land. This area is located north of a place called Raupunga.

River's Path

When the river first begins, it flows towards the east. After a while, it changes direction and turns to the southeast.

Reaching the Sea

Finally, the Waihua River reaches Hawke Bay. This bay is part of the Pacific Ocean. The river meets the bay about 15 kilometers (about 9 miles) west of a town called Wairoa.

What Does the Name "Waihua" Mean?

The name "Waihua" comes from the Māori language. The Ministry for Culture and Heritage in New Zealand helps us understand the meaning of Māori words.

Meaning of the Name

They tell us that "Waihua" means "fish roe waters." Fish roe are the eggs of fish. So, the name suggests that the river might have been a place where fish laid their eggs, or where fish eggs were found.
