History of Waitakere Hospital
Waitakere Hospital started as a small building in Te Atatū in 1945. It was first known as the Waitakere Maternity Hospital. This hospital was only for mothers having babies.
Growing into a General Hospital
The idea for a bigger hospital came up in 1945. But it took ten more years to find a good place for the new "North Western Hospital." Over the years, the hospital grew. A special building for older patients was added. The hospital also became a base for many community health services. These services helped people at home. They also included child disability services. Health services for school children, like nurses and eye/ear tests, were also based here.
In the early 2000s, Waitakere Hospital was upgraded. It became a general hospital, which means it could treat many different types of illnesses and injuries. This upgrade cost about NZ$60 million. Even with these improvements, the hospital sometimes faced challenges. Like many public hospitals in New Zealand, it worked hard to meet the needs of all its patients.
