Wale Hicks facts for kids
John Wale Hicks was an important person in the Anglican Church during the late 1800s. He was a bishop (a high-ranking church leader), an educationalist (someone who works in education), and an author (a writer). He followed a special part of the Anglican Church called the Anglo-Catholic tradition.
Life of John Wale Hicks
John Wale Hicks was born in 1840. He studied at the University of London and also at St Thomas's Hospital, which is a famous hospital. Later, in 1866, he went to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge to continue his studies.
In 1871, he became a priest, which is called being Ordained. His first job was as a Curate (a junior priest) at a church in Cambridge called Little St Mary's.
John Wale Hicks was very smart and interested in many subjects, not just religion. He was a scientist who studied different fields. In 1874, he became a fellow at Sidney Sussex College. This means he was a senior member of the college, often involved in teaching and research. While there, he wrote books about both religious ideas and also about inorganic chemistry, which is a type of science.
Later, he was chosen to be the Dean of Sidney Sussex College. This is another important leadership role within the college. In 1892, he became the Bishop of Bloemfontein. This was a big role in South Africa. He stayed in this position until he passed away on October 12, 1899. There is a special window in Clawton parish church that remembers him.
