The Walkington Hoard is a special collection of ancient gold coins. These coins are called staters and were made by a group of people called the Corieltavians. They lived in Britain a very long time ago, during the British Iron Age. What makes this hoard interesting is that it wasn't found all at once. Instead, people using metal detectors discovered these coins bit by bit over many years in a place called Walkington in East Yorkshire.

Discovering the Ancient Coins

The first part of this amazing hoard was found in November 1999. A metal detectorist found eleven gold coins. After that, more coins kept appearing over the next nine years. People found more batches of coins in different years, like 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2008.

In total, at least 116 gold coins have been found from the Walkington Hoard so far. Each discovery added to the mystery and excitement of this ancient treasure.

Where to See the Hoard

Once these ancient coins were found, they needed a safe home. The first two groups of coins, found in 1999 and 2000, were bought by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council. These coins were then put on display at Sewerby Hall for everyone to see.

Later, another group of 18 coins, found in 2003, was acquired by the Yorkshire Museum. This means you can see parts of the Walkington Hoard in different places, helping us learn more about the people who lived in Britain thousands of years ago.
