The Walpole Academy is an old school building in Walpole, New Hampshire. It stands on Main Street. Today, the Walpole Historical Society owns it. They use it as a museum about local history.
This building was constructed in 1831. It is a great example of a 19th-century Greek Revival style academy. It first served as a private school until 1853. Later, it became Walpole's public high school until 1950. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
About Walpole Academy
The former Walpole Academy building is on the south side of Walpole's village center. It is set back from the east side of Main Street. This building is two and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a gabled roof. The outside is covered with wooden clapboards.
Building Design
The academy looks like a classic Greek temple. It has Doric columns at the front. These columns hold up an entablature, which is a fancy horizontal part. Above that is a triangular pediment. The pediment has a fanlight detail, which is a window shaped like a fan. On top of the building, there is an octagonal cupola. A cupola is a small dome-like structure. This one has arches around it.
History of the School
Walpole Academy started as a private high school in 1825. The building you see today was built in 1831. Aaron Prentiss Howland likely built it. He was a local builder known for many beautiful Greek Revival designs. The academy stayed a private school until 1853. That year, the town bought it. They used it as their public high school.
In 1950, the Walpole Historical Society bought the building from the town. Now, the museum displays many interesting local items. These include old town records and historical objects.
