Walter Brown (born August 17, 1917 – died June 1956) was an American blues singer. He was known for singing with Jay McShann's band in the 1940s. Walter Brown also helped write one of their most famous songs, "Confessin' the Blues."

Early Life and Music

Walter Brown was born in Dallas, Texas. He loved music and became a talented singer. In 1941, he joined Jay McShann's orchestra. This band was very popular at the time.

Singing with Jay McShann

While with McShann's band, Walter Brown sang on many successful songs. One of these was "Confessin' the Blues," which became a big hit. Another popular song he sang was "Hootie Blues." A very famous musician named Charlie Parker, who played the saxophone, was also in this band. Walter Brown left the band later and Jimmy Witherspoon took his place.

Later Recordings

After leaving McShann's band, Walter Brown recorded some songs with the Tiny Grimes Sextet in 1947. One of these songs was their version of "Open the Door Richard." Later, he tried to have a solo singing career. He recorded music for different companies like King, Signature, and Mercury.

In 1949, he briefly joined Jay McShann again for some recording sessions. Walter Brown made his last two recordings in Houston in 1951. These songs were released by the Peacock record company. He passed away in June 1956.
