Walter Blake Kirwan (1754–1805) was an important Irish priest and a very famous speaker. He was known for his powerful sermons, which often helped raise money for good causes.

Early Life and Education

Walter Blake Kirwan was born in Gort, County Galway, Ireland, in 1754. He grew up in a Roman Catholic family. From a young age, he planned to become a priest.

Studying in Europe

He first studied at a Jesuit school called St. Omer's College. When he was 17, he traveled to St. Croix in the West Indies. This was a Danish colony at the time. His father's cousin was a rich businessman there. However, Walter Kirwan did not like the hot weather. More importantly, he strongly disagreed with slavery, which was common there. Because of this, he soon returned to Europe.

Back in Europe, his uncle, Archbishop Anthony Blake, advised him to continue his studies. He went to the University of Louvain in Belgium. He finished his studies for the priesthood with great success. In 1777, he became a priest. He even taught at the university, holding a special position in philosophy. After leaving Louvain, he moved to London.

A Change in His Path

In 1785, Walter Kirwan stopped working as a Catholic priest. Two years later, in 1787, he joined the Church of Ireland. This church is also known as the Anglican Church.

New Roles in Dublin

After joining the Church of Ireland, he received several important jobs. He was appointed to St. Peter's Church, Aungier Street, Dublin. He also became a canon at St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. This meant he held a special position called a prebend in Howth, County Dublin. He also became the rector of Church of St Nicholas Without, Dublin (Church of Ireland). In 1800, he was given the title of Dean of Killala.

Family and Legacy

Walter Kirwan married Wilhelmina Richards on September 22, 1798. They had four children together: two sons and two daughters. One of his sons, Anthony La Touche Kirwan, also became an Anglican priest.

Walter Blake Kirwan passed away at his home in Dublin on October 27, 1805. He was 51 years old.

Helping Others

Walter Kirwan was famous for his powerful speeches, especially those that helped raise money for people in need. An orphanage for girls was even named in his honor. It was called Kirwan House. This showed how much his fundraising efforts were appreciated. After he died, a book of his sermons was published in 1816.
