Early Life and Family

Walter Norborne was the son of John Norborne. His family lived in a place called Hilmarton in Wiltshire, England. He later married Mary Chivers. Her family was from Quemerford. Walter and Mary had a son, also named Walter. His son later became a Member of Parliament for Calne too.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In April 1640, Walter Norborne was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Calne. This happened during a special meeting of Parliament called the Short Parliament. Being an MP meant he represented the people of Calne in the House of Commons.

Supporting the King

During the English Civil War, Walter Norborne strongly supported King Charles I. Because he sided with the King, the Parliament that opposed the King made him pay a large fine. He had to pay £380, which was a lot of money back then!

His Later Years and Legacy

Walter Norborne passed away in 1659. He was buried in a church in the north transept. There is a special stone tablet there with words written about him in Latin and Greek. These words were written by Thomas Pierce, who was a leader at Magdalen College Oxford. The words on his tombstone say that his strong loyalty to the Church and the King caused some disagreements among the people of Calne when he was buried.
