Walter L. Sharpe III, born on July 18, 1986, is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for the Yulon team in the Super Basketball League (SBL). He plays as a power forward or center.
Early Basketball Journey
Walter Sharpe went to Parker High School in Birmingham, Alabama. He was considered a very talented young player. In 2004, experts ranked him as one of the top power forwards in the country.
He later went to Mississippi State University to play college basketball. During his time there, he faced some challenges with his studies and eventually left the team. He then transferred to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). At UAB, he played well, scoring about 14.2 points per game in 12 games. However, he again had difficulties with his schoolwork and was unable to play during the spring semester of the 2007–08 season.
Professional Career
Walter Sharpe was chosen by the Seattle SuperSonics as the 32nd player in the 2008 NBA draft. Soon after being drafted, his rights were traded to the Detroit Pistons. Around this time, Sharpe was diagnosed with narcolepsy, which is a sleeping disorder that makes a person feel very sleepy during the day.
In July 2009, he was traded to the Denver Nuggets. Later that month, he was traded again to the Milwaukee Bucks. He was released by the Bucks in October 2009.
In December 2011, Sharpe signed with the Memphis Grizzlies for their training camp. However, he was released by the Grizzlies before the regular season began.
In March 2013, he joined the GlobalPort Batang Pier team in the PBA. After playing only two games, his contract was ended early by the team due to issues with his professional conduct. The team stated they would not allow actions that could harm the reputation of their team or the league.
After his time in the NBA and the PBA, Walter Sharpe played for many different teams around the world. He played in Puerto Rico for Brujos de Guayama in 2014 and in Venezuela for Cocodrilos de Caracas in 2015. He also played in China, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. More recently, he played for teams in Taiwan, including Taiwan Beer and Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor. Since 2019, he has been playing for the Yulon Luxgen Dinos (now known as Yulon) in the Super Basketball League.
