Sir Walter de Moray was an important Scottish noble who lived a long time ago, in the 1200s. He was known as the Lord of many lands, including Petty, Bracholy, Boharm, Arteldol, and Bothwell. He also held a very important job called the Justiciar of Lothian. He passed away around the year 1278.

Sir Walter's Life and Role

Walter de Moray was the son of William de Moravia of Petty. His mother was a daughter of David Olifard. Walter took over his father's lands and titles by the year 1226.

In 1236, Walter traveled with King Alexander II of Scotland. They went to England to meet with King Henry III of England. This shows how important Walter was in Scottish politics.

Lands and Titles

In 1242, Walter inherited more lands. These included Bothwell and Drumsargard in Lanarkshire. He also gained Smailholm in Berwickshire.

Walter held the important position of Justiciar of Lothian in 1255. A Justiciar was like a chief judge or a high-ranking official. They helped the king manage justice and laws in a specific area.

When Walter passed away around 1278, his oldest son took over his titles. His son became known as "Dominius de Bothwell," which means "Lord of Bothwell." Walter also owned other lands like Agenway, Botruphin, and Croy.

Sir Walter's Family

Walter de Moray married a daughter of Máel Coluim II, Earl of Fife. Together, they had several children.

His Children

  • William de Moray of Bothwell (died around 1300). He did not have any children of his own.
  • Andrew de Moray (died 1298). Andrew married twice. His first wife was a daughter of John I Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, and they had children. His second wife was Euphemia. She was the daughter of Roger FitzJohn and Isabel de Dunbar. Andrew and Euphemia did not have children together.
  • David de Moravia. David became a very important church leader. He was known as the Bishop of Moray.
