Wand dewberry
Scientific classification
Genus:
Rubus
Species:
arcuans

Rubus arcuans, also known as the wand dewberry, is a special kind of flowering plant that belongs to the rose family. Even though it's related to roses, it looks more like a blackberry or raspberry plant. This plant is quite rare and is only found in certain parts of North America.

What is the Wand Dewberry?

The wand dewberry is a small plant that grows close to the ground. It is part of a very large group of plants called Rubus. This group includes many well-known fruits like blackberries and raspberries. Rubus arcuans is called a "dewberry" because its stems often trail along the ground. It was first officially described by scientists in 1921.

Where Does It Grow?

This rare plant lives in specific areas of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. In Canada, you can find it in Québec, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. In the United States, it grows in Massachusetts and Maine. Because it only grows in these few places, it is considered a rare species. This means there are not many of them around.

Why is it Special?

The Rubus group of plants is very interesting to scientists. Their genetics (how their traits are passed down) are super complex! This complexity makes it hard for scientists to figure out exactly which plants should be called separate species. There are many rare Rubus species, just like the wand dewberry, that only grow in small areas.

Scientists are still studying Rubus arcuans to learn more about it. They want to understand its taxonomy, which is how living things are grouped and named. Some studies suggest that the wand dewberry might have started as a hybrid. A hybrid plant is created when two different types of plants mix together. In this case, scientists think R. arcuans might be a mix of R. setosus and R. flagellaris. This makes the wand dewberry even more unique!
