About Wang Ying
Wang Ying was born in Shanghai, China. She started playing the piano when she was just four years old! Her first teacher was her own father, Wang Xilin, who is also a composer.
She went to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music to study how to create music. She learned about composition and how to arrange music for different instruments. She finished her studies there with great success in 2002.
In 2003, Wang Ying moved to Cologne, Germany, to continue her music education. She studied with famous composers like York Höller and Helmut Lachenmann. She also learned about electronic music, which uses computers and special instruments to make sounds. She finished her advanced studies in Germany in 2011.
After that, she went to Paris, France, in 2011 to study at IRCAM. This is a very special place for music and computer science. She learned even more about combining music with technology.
Her Music Style
Wang Ying's music is really unique! She often mixes sounds from traditional Chinese music with modern Western pop music. She also loves to use electronics and special electronic instruments, like the minimoog, in her pieces. Sometimes, her music even includes visuals, like videos or projections, to go along with the sounds. Her music often explores important ideas and themes.

Wang Ying has won several important awards for her music. These include the Heidelberger Künstlerinnenpreis in 2017 and the Irino-Prize in 2014. She has also been asked to create new music for many festivals. She even teaches about electronic music and her own compositions at music schools in China and Germany.
In 2012, Wang Ying made history! She was only the second female composer to win the Biennial Brandenburg Symphony Composition Competition. This was a big achievement for her!
