The Warders Cottages are two old cottages located next to each other at 1 and 3 Barrack Lane in Parramatta, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. These buildings are very important because of their history. They are officially protected as heritage sites. They were added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.

A Look Back at the Cottages' History

These cottages were built a long time ago, between 1842 and 1844. It is thought that a merchant named John Solomon built them. He might have built them as an investment, hoping to rent them out to working-class families.

Changes Over the Years

In the middle of the 1900s, the cottages were updated. This renovation almost doubled the space inside them. In 1975, the National Trust of Australia officially recognized them as important historical buildings.

The cottages were empty for a while in the 1980s. After that, they were fully renovated again. They are now used as businesses instead of homes.

What's in a Name?

Even though they are called the Warders Cottages, they were not built at the same time as the nearby barracks. Barracks were buildings where soldiers or convicts lived. The idea that these cottages were linked to the barracks probably came about much later. There is no old proof that they were built together.

Nearby Developments

In the late 1980s, a new office building was constructed very close to the cottages. Even though a group called the Heritage Council thought this new building might affect the old cottages, the construction went ahead.

Protecting the Warders Cottages

The Warders Cottages have been protected for many years because of their historical value. In 1979, they first received protection from being torn down. Later, in 1986, a temporary order was put in place to protect them. This became a permanent protection order in 1989. Finally, they were officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. This listing helps make sure these important old buildings are preserved for the future.
