The Ware Creek School is a historic building located in Blounts Creek, North Carolina. It was built in 1921 and served as an important school for many years. This school is a special type called a Rosenwald school.

What is a Rosenwald School?

A Rosenwald school was one of many schools built for African American children in the early 20th century. These schools were created with help from Julius Rosenwald, who was the president of Sears, Roebuck and Company. He worked with Booker T. Washington and the Tuskegee Institute to build thousands of schools across the Southern United States. These schools provided better education for Black students during a time when schools were segregated.

The Ware Creek School Building

The Ware Creek School building is a one-story structure. It has a rectangular shape with a unique roof style called a hipped roof. The building also has parts that stick out from the front, known as projecting pavilions.

Inside, the main part of the school had three classrooms. There was also a special "industrial classroom." This room was used for teaching practical skills, like carpentry or sewing. The building's design shows influences from the American Craftsman style, which was popular for its simple, sturdy, and handcrafted look.

History of the School

The Ware Creek School opened its doors in 1921. It provided education to children in the Blounts Creek area for over 30 years. However, in 1954, the school stopped being used for classes.

A Historic Landmark

Because of its importance, the Ware Creek School was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 6, 1996. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history. Being on this list helps protect the building and recognize its value to the community and the nation.
