The Warenski-Duvall Commercial Building and Apartments is a historic building in Murray, Utah. It was built in 1915 and has two stories made of brick. This building is special because it helped Murray grow into a city. It is also part of the Murray Downtown Historic District. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important part of history.

The first owner was Edward J. Warenski. He ran a grocery store and a saloon on State Street. Later, in 1923, the Duvall family bought the building. They changed the top floor into apartments where families and workers lived.

A Look at the Warenski-Duvall Building's History

The Warenski-Duvall Building shows how Murray City changed a lot in the early 1900s. Between 1902 and the 1930s, many businesses opened along State Street. Most of these businesses were owned by families who had left farming to find new jobs. Some were also owned by immigrant families who came to Murray to work in the smelter industry.

Who Were the Warenski Family?

Edward Charles and Susannah Aldian Warenski were immigrants. Edward came from Poland and Susannah from England. They first settled in Salt Lake City in the 1860s. By the early 1900s, the Warenski family moved to Murray.

They owned a large piece of land near State Street. In 1915, they tore down an older store on their land. In its place, they built the two-story brick Warenski building we see today.

What Businesses Were First in the Building?

After the Warenski grocery store, other businesses moved in. These included Frank Metcalfs Automotive Repair & Accessories Company. Granite Furniture Company also had a store there. Carlisle Motor Company was another early tenant.

How the Duvall Family Took Over

On June 6, 1923, the Warenski family sold the building to John W. Johnson. John Johnson and his brother-in-law, Tony Duvall, worked together. They decided to change the upper floor into apartments.

Tony Duvall also built and managed the Gem Theatre. This theater was located just north of the Warenski building. The Johnsons and Duvalls lived in apartments above the theater. By 1925, Tony and his wife, Marguerite Morris Duvall, were managing the Gem Theatre. They lived in what became known as the Duvall Apartments. Minnie Torrance Duvall, who helped pay for the family's theater businesses, also moved into the Duvall Apartments.

The Duvall Building's Later Years

In 1926, Tony Duvall took full control of the building. It became known as the Duvall Building. The biggest store in the building was Thomas Martin & Company. This was a general merchandise store.

The Murray Post Office also moved into the building on February 1, 1926. For the next twenty years, the stores stayed mostly the same. The J.P. O'Brien Jewelry Store was at 4869 South State. The Leader Clothing Store was at 4873 South State. And the post office was at 4879 South State. The Duvall Apartments were always busy. Many Duvall family members and other people who worked in downtown Murray lived there.
