Warm facts for kids
Warm is a feeling and a state that is the opposite of cool. When something feels warm, it means it has more energy stored inside it.
What is Warmth?
Warmth is how we describe something that is not cold. It's a feeling we get when our bodies are at a comfortable temperature, or when we touch something that has more heat energy than our hand. Think about a cozy blanket or a warm cup of hot chocolate on a chilly day – that's warmth!
Warmth and Energy
Everything around us is made of tiny particles called molecules. These molecules are always moving. When an object gets warm, the molecules inside it start to move much faster. The faster they move, the more energy they have. This extra energy is what we feel as warmth or heat. So, when you warm up your hands by rubbing them together, you're actually making the molecules in your hands move faster, which creates heat!
How Heat Moves
Heat energy always likes to move from a warmer place to a colder place. It's like water flowing downhill – it never flows uphill on its own. For example, if you put a warm spoon into a cold glass of water, the heat from the spoon will move into the water until both the spoon and the water are the same temperature. This is why a cold drink gets warm if you leave it out on a sunny day, and a hot drink gets cold if you leave it in a cool room. The heat is always trying to balance itself out.
Feeling Warm
Most people feel comfortable when they are warm, but not too warm. Our bodies work best at a certain temperature. If we get too cold, our bodies shiver to try and make heat. If we get too hot, we sweat to try and cool down. Being just the right amount of warm helps us feel good and stay healthy. But if it gets too hot, it can be very uncomfortable and even dangerous.
