The Warren Covered Bridge is a special wooden bridge in Warren, Vermont. It crosses the Mad River on Covered Bridge Road. This bridge is very old and important. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This means it is a protected landmark.
How the Warren Bridge Was Built
The Warren Covered Bridge uses a special design called a queen post truss. This is a way of building bridges with strong wooden frames. It helps the bridge hold up weight. A sign on the bridge also calls it the Lincoln Gap covered bridge. However, this is not its official name.
One interesting thing about this bridge is its shape. The eastern side of the bridge sticks out further. It goes over the road more than the western side. This is a unique feature. The wooden frames inside the bridge are also covered. This is unusual, as most bridges only have their outside covered. Only one other bridge in Vermont is built this way. That bridge is the School House Covered Bridge.
Recent Updates and History
The Warren Covered Bridge has been repaired several times. In 1995, its floor was made stronger. The roof was also replaced that year. Later, in 1998, the bridge had to close. Inspectors found hidden problems with the wooden structure.
The bridge was then fixed up a lot. It reopened on October 6, 2000. On August 28, 2011, a big storm hit. Hurricane Irene caused flooding. This flood damaged one of the bridge's supports. These supports are called abutments. Luckily, the main part of the bridge was not harmed. As of 2020, the Warren Covered Bridge is still open for cars to drive across.
