Warren Kenneth Wood (born April 27, 1887 – died October 27, 1926) was an American golfer. He played golf as an amateur, meaning he played for fun and not as a paid professional. Warren Wood is famous for competing in the 1904 Summer Olympics and winning a gold medal there.

Early Life of Warren Wood

Warren Wood was born on April 27, 1887. His parents were John and Maud Wood. Later, in 1911, he married Maude Langon in Chicago, Illinois. They had two daughters together, named Marjorie and Frances.

Warren Wood was a talented golfer who played in many important tournaments.

Olympic Gold Medal in Golf

In 1904, Warren Wood was part of the American golf team at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis. His team won the gold medal for golf! In the team event, he finished in 10th place. He also played in the individual golf competition. He placed 11th in the first part, but he was eliminated in the first round of the match play.

Major Amateur Golf Wins

Warren Wood won several big amateur golf tournaments.

  • In 1906, he won the North and South Amateur championship.
  • He also won the Western Amateur in 1913. He was the runner-up in this tournament two other times, in 1906 and 1912.
  • In 1910, he finished second in the U.S. Amateur.
  • He also placed fourth in the Western Open in 1907.

Later Golf Matches

On August 19, 1921, Warren Wood played in a golf match with another famous golfer, Chick Evans. They played against Jock Hutchison and Phil Gaudin. More than 2,000 people came to watch this exciting match in Chicago. Sailors from the Great Lakes Naval Station even helped manage the large crowd.

Military Service

Warren Wood served as a soldier during World War I. After the war ended on November 11, 1918, he returned home. He left France on January 24, 1919, on a ship called the RMS Celtic. He arrived in New York on February 3, 1919.

Death and Legacy

Warren Wood passed away on October 27, 1926, in Pelham Manor, New York. He was 39 years old. He was buried in Oak Woods Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois. People remember Warren Wood best for helping the United States win a gold medal in golf at the 1904 Summer Olympics.
