Warsaw Uprising (1794) facts for kids
The Warsaw Uprising of 1794 was a big fight in Warsaw, the capital city of Poland. It happened because Polish people wanted to stop Russia from controlling their city. The uprising began on April 17, 1794. This was right after a famous Polish leader, Tadeusz Kościuszko, won an important battle.
Even though the Russian army was larger and had more powerful weapons, the Polish people fought bravely. The Russian soldiers started to lose ground and many of them were defeated.
The Polish people had been getting ready for this fight since 1793. They became very popular and many volunteers joined their army. A shoemaker named Jan Kiliński led one of these groups. Another important group that helped Poland gain freedom were Polish people who had been forced to join the Russian army. A French artist, Jan Piotr Norblin, watched the fighting and drew pictures of what happened.
