The Washburne Historic District is named after C.W. Washburne. He was a banker and owned a flour mill. This area was once part of a large land claim from 1852. This claim belonged to Elias Briggs, who founded Springfield.

The streets and blocks in the district were planned between 1872 and 1890. Many of the buildings still standing today were built between 1890 and 1915. In fact, almost 44% of them are from this time. By the mid-1920s, most of the district had paved streets and sidewalks.
