Wat Phra-sri Rattana Mahathat, often called Wat Yai, is a very important monastery (a special place where Buddhist monks live and worship) in Phitsanulok, a city in Thailand. It is known for its beautiful buildings and a famous statue of Buddha.

History of Wat Yai

This amazing temple was built a very long time ago, in the year 1357 BCE. BCE stands for "Before Common Era," which is like saying "Before Christ." It was built during the time when King Maha Thamma Racha I was ruling. A king's "reign" is the period when they are in charge of a country.

Famous Buddha Images

Wat Yai is home to one of the most respected Buddha statues in Thailand. This statue is called Phra Buddha Chinnaraj. It is a very beautiful and important image that many people come to see and show respect to.

Another important statue at the temple is called Phra Attharos. This is a standing Buddha image that you can find in front of the large tower.

Special Doors and Towers

The temple has some truly special wooden doors. These doors are decorated with shiny pearls! They were made by King Borommakot in the year 1756. He created them as a "tribute" to Phra Buddha Chinnaraj. A tribute is a gift or action that shows great respect and admiration.

Behind the main temple building, there is a very tall tower called a pagoda. This pagoda is about 36 m (118 ft) high, which is like a 12-story building! Inside this tall tower, there is a staircase. If you go up the stairs, you will find a small space, or "niche," that holds sacred "Buddha relics." These are very old and important remains of the Buddha.
