Why the Name Changed
The temple's name was changed to Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon much later. This happened after a great victory by King Naresuan the Great. In 1592, King Naresuan won a very important elephant battle against the Crown Prince of Burma. To celebrate this huge victory, a very tall chedi (a bell-shaped tower) was built at the temple. This chedi is still one of the main attractions today. The new name, "Great Monastery of Auspicious Victory," honored this important win.
