The Watchtower of Torrelodones, known in Spanish as Atalaya de Torrelodones, is an old tower built a long time ago by people from the Islamic world. You can find it in the town of Torrelodones, which is in the Community of Madrid, Spain. This tower was built sometime between the 800s and 1000s, during a period when a large part of Spain was called Al-Andalus and was ruled by the Umayyad family.

This tower is very important and is considered an "Asset of Cultural Interest." It is one of the best-preserved Islamic watchtowers in the Madrid area. Over the years, the tower has been changed a bit. For example, in 1928, some parts of its walls fell down, and it was repaired. In 1983, it was officially declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, which means it's a very important cultural landmark.

What's in a Name?

The Watchtower of Torrelodones gets its name from a special tree called the Honeyberry. This tree used to grow everywhere around the tower. Because of the tower and the many honeyberry trees, the small village nearby started to be called Torrelodones. The tower became a symbol for the village and is even shown on its official coat of arms.
