Weis is a popular Australian brand that makes yummy frozen treats like ice creams and fruit desserts. They are famous for their bar-shaped fruit ice creams called Weis Bars. You can find these delicious bars in most Australian shops and supermarkets. They often come in boxes of eight mini bars or four regular-sized bars.
The original Weis factory used to be in Toowoomba, Queensland. However, that factory has now closed. All Weis products are now made in Minto, New South Wales.
The Story of Weis
How Weis Bars Began
The very first Weis Fruito Bar was created by a person named Les Weis in 1957. He started selling them from his own small shop in Toowoomba. This original Fruito Bar was made with tasty fruits like pineapple, banana, and passion fruit.
Two years later, in 1959, the Mango and Cream bar was launched. This quickly became the most popular Weis Bar!
A Queensland Icon
Weis has been recognized as a very important part of Queensland's history and culture. In 2009, during Queensland's Q150 celebrations, the Weis Bar was named one of the Q150 Icons. This award celebrated its role as an important "innovation and invention" from Queensland.
Weis Joins Unilever
For many years, Weis was a family-owned Australian company. The Weis family ran the business for two generations. However, in August 2017, the family decided to sell the company. It was bought by a large international company called Unilever.
Later, in 2019, Unilever announced that the original Weis factory in Toowoomba would close. All the production moved to Unilever's factory in Minto, New South Wales.
