Wendell Gilbert Rayburn was an important educator. He was born on May 20, 1929, and passed away on December 27, 2016. He served as the president of Savannah State College from 1980 to 1988.
Leading Savannah State College
Dr. Rayburn was the eighth president of Savannah State College. During his time as president, he helped the college grow in important ways.
New Buildings and Growth
Under Dr. Rayburn's leadership, the college started its first big building project since the 1970s. This project added several new buildings to the campus.
Some of the buildings completed during his term include:
- The marine biology complex, which is used for studying ocean life.
- The Jordan College of Business Administration, a place for business studies.
- The president’s house, which was later named William E. Gardner Hall.
- The Harris-McDew Health Services Center, a facility for health services.
Moving to a New Role
Dr. Rayburn left Savannah State College in 1988. He then became the president of Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri.
