West Greenlandic, also called Kalaallisut, is the main language spoken in Greenland. Most people living in Greenland speak it. Thousands of Greenlandic Inuit also speak it in Denmark. In total, about 50,000 people speak West Greenlandic.
This language was first spoken in the southwestern part of Greenland, especially around the capital city, Nuuk.

Danish is also very important in Greenland. Many people use it in daily life and for public services. It is also the main language for Danes living in Greenland.
A Language of the Past
There was once a special language called West Greenlandic Pidgin. This was a mixed trade language that was based on West Greenlandic. People used it for trading goods with each other. This language is no longer spoken today.
