What Makes West Harting Down SSSI Special?

West Harting Down SSSI is a biological SSSI. This means it's recognized for its important living things, like plants and their natural homes. The main reason it's so special is its mature yew forest. Yew trees are very old and grow on the chalky ground of the South Downs.

Amazing Plants and Flowers

Besides the ancient yew trees, you can find beautiful areas of chalk grassland here. This type of grassland grows on chalky soil and is home to many interesting plants. Some of the cool plants you might spot include:

  • Rock rose: A bright yellow flower that loves sunny, dry spots.
  • Carnation sedge: A grass-like plant that adds to the green carpet.
  • Perforate St John’s wort: Known for its yellow flowers and leaves that look like they have tiny holes.
  • Salad burnet: A plant with small, reddish flowers and leaves that taste a bit like cucumber.

You'll also see different types of grasses, such as:

  • Red fescue: A common grass that can grow in many places.
  • Tor-grass: A tall, tough grass often found on chalky hills.
  • Common bent: Another type of grass that helps make up the grassland.

These plants create a rich and diverse habitat for insects and other small creatures.
