The West Main Street Historic District is a special neighborhood in Marlborough, Massachusetts. It's a place where many old homes have been kept safe and sound. This area is just west of Marlborough's city center.
The district covers parts of West Main Street, Pleasant Street, Witherbee Street, and Winthrop Street. Most of the buildings here are houses. They were built between 1820 and 1930. This was a time when Marlborough was growing fast as a place where many factories and businesses operated. The district is about 15-acre (6.1 ha) in size and has 77 properties. Almost all of these properties are important because of their history. In 2001, this district was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's officially recognized as a historically important place in the United States.

What Makes This Area Special?
Marlborough grew into a busy industrial city in the 1800s. Factories, shops, and businesses were mostly in the downtown area. A neighborhood of homes grew up just west of downtown. This area shows how cities often developed during that time.
Homes of Important People
Wealthy factory owners, managers, and shopkeepers built large, beautiful homes here. These houses were on big lots with well-kept lawns. They were also close to the city's business areas. West Main Street and Pleasant Street were the main roads where these fancy homes were built.
Some examples of these grand homes include:
- The Brigham-Cutting House at 22 Pleasant Street. It was built around 1876-77 and has an Italianate style.
- The William Pitt Brigham House at 28 Pleasant Street. This home was built around 1858 and shows the Greek Revival style.
- The Stevens House at 32 Pleasant Street. Built around 1885, it's a great example of the Queen Anne style.
The William Pitt Brigham House and the Stevens House were both owned by factory owners around the year 1900.
Homes of Skilled Workers
The houses on Witherbee and Winthrop Streets are on slightly smaller lots. These larger homes were built for skilled workers. Many of them have since been divided into smaller apartments.
Some examples of these homes are:
- The George A. Howe House at 59 Witherbee Street. It was built around 1870 in the Second Empire style.
- The Kelley House at 17 Winthrop Street. This home was built around 1915 and is in the Bungalow style.
- The Ellis House at 14 Winthrop. Built around 1920, it shows the Georgian Revival style.
Other Important Buildings
There are also two main non-residential buildings in the district.
- The Christian Science Church is located at the corner of West Main and Winthrop Streets. It was built in 1920 and looks like a large house.
- The St. Mary's Credit Union Building at 135 West Main Street is a large building in the Colonial Revival style. However, it's not considered part of the historic significance of the area.
