West Ogwell Church is a very old church located in Ogwell, Devon, England. It was built a long, long time ago, in the 13th century. This means it's over 700 years old!

This special church is listed as a Grade I building. This is the highest level of protection for historic buildings in England. It means the church is very important and needs to be carefully looked after. West Ogwell Church is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. This group helps to save old churches that are no longer used for regular services. The church officially became part of the Trust's care in October 1982.

History of the Church Building

Early Construction: 13th and 14th Centuries

The main parts of the church, called the chancel and the nave, were built around the year 1300. The chancel is the area near the altar, and the nave is the main part where people sit.

About a hundred years later, around 1400, a tall west tower was added. This tower has two levels and a special top edge called a battlemented parapet. This means it has a decorative, castle-like top with gaps.

Inside the Church: Old Features

The inside of West Ogwell Church has many interesting old features. You can find a special stone seat from the 13th century called a sedilia. This seat was used by the priests during services.

There is also a pulpit from the Jacobean period. This means it was made during the time of King James I, which was in the early 1600s. A pulpit is a raised stand where the preacher gives sermons.

Other parts of the church, like the box pews, are from a later time. Box pews are like enclosed seating areas. The tower screen and the curved communion rails are also from the late Georgian period. This was in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

West Ogwell Church in Movies

This historic church has even been used in films! In 2014, it was a filming location for a British horror movie called The Borderlands. It's pretty cool that such an old building can still be part of modern stories.
