Who Built West View?
West View was built by a successful doctor named Richard Bonifield. He started his medical practice in Zanesville in 1867. By the late 1880s, he had done well enough to build a big house.
He chose to build his home in an area that was still quite new. When West View was finished, it was one of the very first buildings on Sunkel Boulevard. Most of the other houses in the area were built much later, around the 1910s and 1920s.
What Does West View Look Like?
West View is built in the Queen Anne style. This style was popular for homes in the late 1800s. It often includes towers, turrets, and decorative porches.
Special Features of the House
The house has a strong stone base and a roof made of slate. Its walls are made with a wood frame. You can see special details from the Eastlake style, especially on the front porch. The porch has unique support columns and a fancy, decorated frieze (a long strip of decoration).
Inside West View
One of the coolest things about West View is its two-story inside. It has barely changed in over 100 years! Only the bathrooms and kitchen have been updated with modern plumbing.
Inside, you'll find beautiful gold-colored oak wood panels. These panels have never been painted, so they look just as they did when the house was new. There is also artistic tiling and five original fireplace mantels.
Why is West View Important?
In 1982, West View was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places in the United States that are worth saving. West View earned its spot because of its special and well-preserved architecture.
It's one of only two homes in its neighborhood on this list. The other is the Capt. James Boggs Tannehill House. Both houses were built before the neighborhood was fully developed.
