The James Boggs Tannehill House is a special old home in Zanesville, Ohio. It was built way back in 1892. This house was once home to important people from Muskingum County. Today, it is known as a historic site because of its past.

What Makes This House Special?

The Tannehill House is built from weatherboarding, which means it has overlapping wooden boards on the outside. It has a slate roof and a strong foundation made of sandstone. You can also see parts made of brickwork.

Colonial Revival Style

This house has a big front gable, which is the triangular part of the wall under the roof. It stands three stories tall and has a large front porch. The Tannehill House is one of the oldest Colonial Revival buildings in the area. This style was just starting to become popular in 1892 when the house was built.

Meet the Tannehill Family

The house is named after Captain James Boggs Tannehill. He was born in Belmont County, Ohio in 1827.

Captain James Boggs Tannehill's Life

James Boggs Tannehill became well-known during the Civil War. He was a captain of a company of soldiers called the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Even after the war ended, people still called him "captain."

In the early 1870s, he moved to Muskingum County. There, he became a successful farmer. He was even chosen to be the president of a local farmers' group.

Retirement in Zanesville

As he got older, Captain Tannehill decided to move into Zanesville. He built this house as a place to live after he retired. He was 65 years old when the house was built. He lived there until he passed away in 1909.

P. H. Tannehill, the Judge

After Captain Tannehill's death, his son, P. H. Tannehill, continued to live in the house. P. H. Tannehill was a famous local attorney. In 1932, he was elected to the county's common pleas court. He served as a judge until he died in 1948.

Why Is It a Historic Site?

In 1979, the James Boggs Tannehill House and another small building nearby were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historic places in the United States.

A Special Recognition

Many buildings in Zanesville have been added to this list. The Tannehill House was chosen for two main reasons:

  • Its unique architecture.
  • It was the home of the important Tannehill family.

One of the most important things about the house is that it's an early example of the Colonial Revival style. When Captain Tannehill had the house built, this style was very new and not many people knew about it. The Tannehill House has changed very little since it was built. It is one of the best examples of the Colonial Revival style in the area, no matter when it was built.
