Westfield St Lukes is a very popular shopping centre in Auckland, New Zealand. It's located on St Lukes Road in the Mount Albert area. This mall is one of the three largest shopping centres in Auckland's western suburbs.
Every year, about 6 million people visit Westfield St Lukes. It has a huge shopping space, covering 43,000 square metres. Inside, you'll find many well-known stores. These include Farmers, Kmart, and Countdown. There's also an Event Cinemas movie theatre with 8 screens. In total, the centre has over 160 different shops for you to explore.
History of the Centre
Westfield St Lukes first opened its doors in 1971. This makes it one of the oldest shopping centres in all of New Zealand. On its very first day, around 100,000 people came to visit!
To keep the centre modern and exciting, Westfield invested a lot of money. In the early 2000s, they spent about NZ$55 million. This money was used to make the centre bigger and to update its look.
In 2008, a group of retail experts rated shopping centres in New Zealand. Westfield St Lukes received a high score of three and a half stars. The highest possible rating was four stars. They looked at things like how much shopping space there was. They also considered how well the shops were doing and how appealing the centre was.
Future Plans for Growth
In 2009, Westfield wanted to make the shopping centre even bigger. They asked for permission to expand it to 92,500 square metres. This would include up to 77,500 square metres for shops and cafes. They also planned for 15,000 square metres of office space. The new buildings could be up to six storeys tall.
If these plans go ahead, Westfield St Lukes would become the largest shopping centre in New Zealand. Westfield already owns many properties near the centre where they want to expand. However, some neighbours and local groups have said they will oppose the expansion. Their main concern is that a bigger mall would cause much more traffic in the area.
