Weston County Courthouse: A Historic Building

Design and Style

The courthouse is built in the Beaux-Arts style. This style was popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It often features grand, fancy designs with classical elements. The Weston County Courthouse is a great example of this style.

The building has a two-story main section in the middle. This part is supported by pairs of tall Ionic columns. These columns hold up a decorative top section and a triangular roof part called a pediment. On top of the roof, there are metal globes. A statue of Justice stands proudly on the pediment. The building is topped with an eight-sided tower called a cupola. This cupola has arched windows.

Over the years, some parts of the building have been updated. The original doors were replaced with new ones. Many windows were filled with glass blocks. The cupola windows were covered with wood panels.

Building History

Building the courthouse was not easy. The first company hired to build it faced problems. They were eventually replaced by new builders. These new builders were John L. Sundstrom, Oscar Linden, Carl Sjostrum, and Robert Linden. They were skilled in working with stone.

The construction was finished in 1911. This was just in time for a special visit. In October 1911, U.S. President William Howard Taft visited Newcastle. He even gave a speech from the courthouse steps!

In 1953, a new three-story section was added to the west side of the building. This addition was built as a war memorial. It uses sandstone for the first two floors and brick for the top floor. These materials match the main courthouse building.

National Recognition

The Weston County Courthouse looks a lot like another courthouse. This other building is the Butte County, South Dakota Courthouse. It was also designed by Charles A. Randall.

The Weston County Courthouse is very important historically. Because of this, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. This list includes buildings and places that are important to American history.
