A Look Back: The Wetherbee House Story
Building a Home in Greenville
The land for the Wetherbee House was bought by Hiram Wetherbee in 1873. We don't know the exact day the house was finished. Hiram Wetherbee was a soldier in the American Civil War. He fought for the Union army. His group spent some time near Greenville. Like many soldiers from the Midwest, he liked the area and decided to live there after the war.
What Else Is There?
There is also a smaller brick building on the property. It's about one and a half stories tall. People call it the "carriage house." A carriage house was a place to keep horse-drawn carriages. Some parts of its design suggest it could have been used for that. But we aren't completely sure what it was used for back then.
Changes Over Time
The Wetherbee House has been changed a few times. Some parts were added not long after it was first built. More changes happened around 1900. Then, more additions were made in the early 1900s. The house has since been partly fixed up. It now looks more like it did before the year 1900.
New Owners, New Purpose
The Wetherbee family owned the house for a long time. They sold it in 1973. The Council of Greenville Garden Clubs bought it. They used it as a place for meetings and a museum. Today, the house is home to the offices of The Greater Greenville Development Foundation. This group helps make downtown Greenville a better place. They also work to help families in Greenville find safe and affordable homes.
A Historic Landmark
The Wetherbee House is important because of its history. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 28, 1977. This means it's recognized as a special building that should be protected.
