Wetumpka, Florida facts for kids
Wetumpka is a small, unincorporated community located in Gadsden County, in the sunny U.S. state of Florida. Being "unincorporated" means it's a community that is part of the larger county area, rather than having its own separate city government.
History
The name Wetumpka comes from the Creek language, which was spoken by the Creek people, a Native American group. In their language, "Wetumpka" means "tumbling water." This name likely described a nearby river or stream. A post office, which is a place where mail is sent and received, was opened in Wetumpka in 1873. It served the community for many years before closing in 1918.
Education
The Gadsden County School District is in charge of the public schools in the Wetumpka area and throughout Gadsden County. As of 2017, Gadsden County High School is the main high school for students living in the county. Before this, there were two high schools, but the students from West Gadsden High School's high school section joined those at what was then called East Gadsden High. This change made Gadsden County High School the only zoned high school for the area.
