The Whataroa River is a cool river in New Zealand. It's located on the South Island, in a part called the West Coast. Sometimes, people also call it the Wataroa River.
This river starts high up in the Southern Alps mountains. It then flows towards the north and northwest. The river passes by the small town of Whataroa on its eastern side. Finally, it reaches the Tasman Sea just south of a place called Abut Head. Many smaller rivers, like the Perth River, flow into the Whataroa River. A main road, State Highway 6, crosses the river between Whataroa and Te Taho.
Fun Activities on the River
The Whataroa River is a great spot for adventure! One popular activity here is whitewater rafting. This is where people go down the river in a special raft, riding over the fast-moving water and rapids.
To get to the higher parts of the river for rafting, people usually either hike (walk) there or take a helicopter. It's an exciting way to see the beautiful New Zealand landscape from the river!
