The Whitacre Tower is the main office, or headquarters, for a big company called AT&T. It is also home to "AT&T Southwest," which used to be called Southwestern Bell Telephone. The building stands 580 feet (177 meters) tall. This makes it the 13th-tallest building in Dallas. The tower is made of white stone and glass. It has more than 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 square meters) of space for offices.

History of Whitacre Tower

The Whitacre Tower was built in 1982. It became an important building in Dallas.

AT&T Moves to Dallas

In 2008, the company AT&T moved its main office to the Whitacre Tower. They moved from a city called San Antonio, in Texas. The mayor of Dallas at the time, Tom Leppert, hoped AT&T would stay in the city center. About 700 workers moved into 17 floors of the tower. These floors were updated for the new employees.

New Owner and New Name

In August 2008, AT&T sold the tower to a company called Icahn Enterprises. Even though they sold it, AT&T still uses the building. They signed a long-term agreement to rent space there.

In 2009, AT&T changed the tower's name to "Whitacre Tower." They named it after Edward Whitacre, Jr.. He used to be the chairman and chief executive of AT&T.

Spirit of Communication Statue

AT&T also moved a special gold statue to the Whitacre Tower. This statue is called "Spirit of Communication." It was moved from AT&T's offices in Bedminster, New Jersey.
