The white-necked laughingthrush (scientific name: Garrulax strepitans) is a cool type of bird. It belongs to a bird family called Leiothrichidae. You can find this bird in places like Yunnan (a part of China), Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand. It loves to live in warm, wet forests, especially those in low areas or on mountains.

What Does It Look Like?

The adult white-necked laughingthrush is about 32 cm (13 in) long. That's about the length of a ruler!

It has a reddish-brown top of its head, called a crown. Its face and throat are a dark brownish-black color.

Around its neck, it has a soft white band, almost like a collar. This white band separates its dark head from its body.

The rest of its body plumage (feathers) is a light brownish-grey. Its eyes are dark, and its beak and legs are grey.

This bird is known for its special call, which sounds a bit like laughing! It looks a lot like another bird, the grey laughingthrush, but the white-necked one has a darker head.

Where Do White-necked Laughingthrushes Live?

The white-necked laughingthrush lives in the tropical parts of southeastern Asia. You can find it in central and northern Thailand, eastern Myanmar, and western Laos. It also lives in the Yunnan province of southwestern China.

These birds prefer to live at certain heights. They are usually found between 500 and 1,800 m (1,600 and 5,900 ft) above sea level.

They typically make their homes in forests with broad-leaved trees. They also like areas with thick bushes and scrubland. These places offer them good cover and plenty of food.

What Is Their Conservation Status?

The white-necked laughingthrush lives across a very large area. Because of this, it is considered quite common in most places. However, it is a bit rarer in China.

Sadly, the number of these birds might be slowly going down. This is mainly because their habitat (the places they live) is being destroyed.

Even with this decline, the total number of white-necked laughingthrushes is still very large. The decline is not happening fast enough to cause a big worry right now.

No other major threats to this bird have been found. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has looked at the bird's situation. They have decided that its conservation status is "least concern". This means it's not currently in danger of disappearing.
