Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Whitesville is a small, quiet community located in Harris County, Georgia, in the United States. It's not a big city with its own government anymore, but it used to be!

A Look at Whitesville's Past

Whitesville got its name from the White family, who were among the very first people to settle there. In 1837, a post office opened in Whitesville. This was a place where people could send and receive letters and packages. It stayed open for many years, until 1905.

Becoming and Un-becoming a Town

Also in 1837, Whitesville became an official 'town.' This happened when the Georgia General Assembly – which is like the state's main law-making group – decided to 'incorporate' it. Being incorporated meant Whitesville could have its own local government and make its own rules. However, in 1995, the special document that made Whitesville a town, called its 'municipal charter,' was taken away. This meant Whitesville was no longer an official town with its own government.

A very old and important building in Whitesville is the Whitesville United Methodist Church. This church and its cemetery were recognized as historically important in 2002. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes special places across the country that are important to history.
