Wibke Gertrud Bruhns was a famous German journalist and writer. She was born Wibke Gertrud Klamroth on September 8, 1938, and passed away on June 20, 2019. She made history in 1971 by becoming the first woman to present the news on German public television. Wibke worked for many TV stations and for Stern magazine in places like Jerusalem and Washington, D.C. She also spoke at a big event called Expo 2000.

Wibke wrote three books about her life and experiences. One book was about her time as a reporter in Israel. Another was a biography about her father, Hans Georg Klamroth. Her third book was her own life story, covering many important political events over the years.

Early Life and Education

Wibke Gertrud Klamroth was born in Halberstadt, Germany. She was one of five children. Her father, Hans Georg Klamroth, was a merchant. He knew about a secret plan to remove Adolf Hitler from power. Sadly, her father was executed on August 26, 1944. After that, her mother had to raise all five children by herself.

Wibke went to several boarding schools, including one in Timmendorfer Strand and another in Plön. She finished her high school education, called Abitur, in Berlin. After school, she lived in London for six months. Her mother was working at the German Embassy there. Wibke then attended a business school for a year. She started studying history and political science in Hamburg, but she did not finish her degree.

Becoming a Media Pioneer

Wibke Bruhns started working in media when she was 22 years old. She worked for different television stations, newspapers, and magazines. She became very well-known as the first female news presenter in West German television. She hosted the ZDF news program heute starting on May 12, 1971. This was a big step for women in journalism.

Later, she worked as a journalist for Stern magazine. She reported from important cities like Jerusalem and Washington, D.C. Wibke Bruhns lived in Berlin as a freelance journalist, meaning she worked for herself. She passed away on June 20, 2019.
