How Wide Bay Got Its Name
Wide Bay was first explored and given its name by a famous explorer named Lieutenant James Cook. This happened on May 18, 1770. Cook was on his first big journey, known as the 1770 voyage, exploring the eastern coast of Australia. He sailed on his ship, the HM Bark Endeavour, when he found and charted this wide area of water.
