History of Widnoon
How Widnoon Got Its Name
Widnoon wasn't always called Widnoon! In an old map book from 1876, it was shown as Duncanville. This name came from James Duncan. He opened a store there in 1854, which was a big deal for the small community.
Early Churches in Widnoon
In 1878, two different church groups, the United Brethren and the Presbyterians, had churches in Widnoon. They built places for people to worship. However, by 1913, these church buildings were no longer being used.
Land Ownership in Widnoon
Widnoon is located on a piece of land known as tract No. 314. This land was also called "Elliott Grove." It was originally owned by a company called Willink & Co. One of the main people in this company was Wilhelm Willink. He was one of several Dutch investors who were part of the Holland Land Company. This company bought and sold large areas of land a long time ago.
