History of Wiener AC Football

Early Days and First Trophies

The football section of Wiener A.C. began on October 14, 1897. In its early years, the club was very successful. They won the Challenge Cup three times (1901, 1903, 1904). They also won the Wiener Tagblatt-Pokal three times (1900, 1901, 1902). These were the most important football trophies in Austria at that time.

In 1910, many players from the first team left the club. They went on to form a new club called WAF. Despite this, Wiener A.C. achieved its biggest success in 1915. That year, they won the Austrian championship!

Cup Wins and European Adventures

In 1928, the club reached the final of the Austrian Cup. They played against SK Admira Wien but lost the match 2–1. A few years later, in the 1930/31 season, they won the Austrian Cup! This victory allowed them to play in the Mitropa Cup. The Mitropa Cup was a big European club competition back then. Wiener A.C. made it all the way to the final! However, they lost both final matches against another Austrian team, First Vienna FC.

During the time Austria was occupied by Nazi-Germany, the club played in a league called the Gauliga Ostmark. In 1959, Wiener A.C. won the Austrian Cup again. They beat SK Rapid Wien in the final.

The Club's Name Changes and Returns

In the 1960s, after being moved down from the top league, the club joined with FK Austria Wien. The new team was called FK Austria/WAC Wien. But soon, FK Austria went back to its old name. Because of this, the name WAC disappeared from Austrian football for a while.

In 1983, the football section of Wiener A.C. started up again. However, it no longer plays in the main football competitions. Today, the club also has successful hockey and basketball teams.
