Wiknatanja facts for kids
The Wiknatanja (also called Wik Ngathanya) were an Indigenous Australian group. They are part of the original peoples who have lived in Australia for thousands of years. The Wiknatanja were one of the many Wik groups living in the northern part of Queensland, on the Cape York Peninsula.
Their Language
The Wiknatanja people spoke a language called Wiknatanja. This language was part of a bigger group of languages known as the Wik languages, which are spoken by different Indigenous groups in the Cape York area.
Their Traditional Lands
The Wiknatanja people lived on their traditional lands, which covered about 300 square miles (780 km2) (around 777 square kilometers). These lands were located along the coast, especially near the mouths of the Kendall River. A researcher named Norman Tindale helped map out where different Indigenous groups lived, and he estimated the size of the Wiknatanja's country.
