Wiktionary is a special kind of dictionary that works like a wiki. This means that people from all over the world can help create and improve it. It's not just a dictionary; it's also a thesaurus, which helps you find words with similar meanings.
Wiktionary is managed by the Wikimedia Foundation. This is the same group that runs Wikipedia, the huge online encyclopedia. Wiktionary is available in many different languages. The English Wiktionary, for example, has over 6.1 million pages and more than 3.5 million people who use it. You can choose different languages right from the Wiktionary homepage.
Wiktionary's Look: The Logo Story
The logo is like the face of a website. It helps you recognize it. Wiktionary has had a few changes to its logo over the years.
Early Logo Changes
In 2006, there was a vote to change the original Wiktionary logo. The old logo was just words. A new design was chosen, but not many people voted. Because of this, smaller Wiktionary versions started using the new logo, but the English Wiktionary kept its original one.
In 2009, another contest was held to find a new logo. The idea was to have all the different language versions of Wiktionary use the same logo. This would make them look more like one big family of projects. Even after this contest, the English Wiktionary still did not switch to the new design.
The Simple English Wiktionary, which uses easier language, also voted on a new logo in 2010. They decided they wanted to use a new logo. However, no changes were actually made, and the idea was eventually forgotten.
