Wilcox Junction is a small, unincorporated community in Gilchrist County, Florida, United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. It's located about 1.4 miles (2.25 kilometers) west of Wilcox and the same distance northwest of Fanning Springs.

Where is Wilcox Junction?

Wilcox Junction is found at specific geographic coordinates: 29.612 degrees North latitude and 82.94 degrees West longitude. This means it's in the northern part of Florida. The land here is quite low, with an elevation of about 26 feet (8 meters) above sea level.

A Historic Railroad Hub

Wilcox Junction was once a very important spot for trains. It was home to a special type of railroad track called a "wye." A wye is shaped like the letter 'Y' and allows trains to turn around or switch to different lines. This wye was built by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, a big train company from the past.

The Train Lines

Two main train lines met at this wye. One was the Thomasville—Dunnellon Line, which connected different cities. The other was the Jacksonville—Wilcox Line. These lines helped move goods and people across Florida and beyond.

From Rails to Trails

Today, trains no longer use the tracks at Wilcox Junction. Instead, all three parts of the old railroad wye have been transformed into something new and exciting. They are now part of the Nature Coast State Trail. This trail is a popular place for people to walk, bike, and enjoy nature. It's a great example of how old train routes can be repurposed for outdoor activities.
