Wilfred II of Besalú facts for kids
Wilfred II of Besalú (died 957) was a count of Besalú from 927 to 957. He was an important leader in his time.
Early Life and Family
Wilfred II was the son of Miró II of Cerdanya and his wife, Ava. When his father died, Wilfred inherited the county of Besalú. His brother, Sunifred, received the county of Cerdanya. Both brothers were young when they became counts. Their mother, Ava, helped rule Besalú until 941 because they were not yet old enough.
Wilfred's Time as Count
Wilfred II was the last count from Catalonia to pay tribute to the Carolingian king. This means he was the last to send gifts or money to show respect to the king of the Franks. In 952, he traveled all the way to Rome. He also started a new monastery called Sant Pere de Camprodon. Monasteries were important centers for learning and religion back then.
End of His Rule
Wilfred II died in 957. He passed away because of a conflict with some of his own people. He did not have any children, so he had no one to inherit his title directly. After his death, his older brother, Sunifred II of Cerdanya, became the new Count of Besalú.
